Introduce yourself

Hi I’m Josh.

I’ve been larping in Auckland for a year and a half now, but up to this time I have never had any presence on Diatribe.

However, the good new is, I’m moving to WELLINGTON in February! So I figure its time to dive into the sea of conversation threads which is Diatribe.

I figure many of you know me by now (that is if Facebook friend status is a true reflection of reality) but I guess this is the best place to start.

See you at the next LARP!!!

Josh, you should most definitely try to come along to 33AR, depending on when in February you are moving.

If you do, and are playing (rather than crewing) maybe have a chat with me, I’m bringing my character back and would happily bring in new characters with him…

I’m Dorian, and I signed up here because I’m just about to start running a Vampire:the Masquerade larp at The Badcave in Palmerston North. Someone left a pile of NZ larps business cards of the counter of said comic/gaming store a while ago, and I thought I might as well check it out.

I’ve been doing the larp thing on and off for around 13 years, mostly Vampire but a few other things here and there. I’m keen to establish more of a community in Palmerston North, becasue this city seems to be lacking in dressing up and having fun-ness.

Hey Dorian, great to hear from you. It would be awesome to see more of a larp community growing in Palmerston North.

There are at least a couple of NZLARPS members there already, and the society is on a mission at the moment to grow regional larp - see this post.

We’ve found that forming a core hub of people to run a variety of game styles and advertising them widely are good ways to get started, because long-lived communities are more likely to form around people running various games. Single larp campaigns or chronicles are great, but the community around them often disperses when they end. Also, a lot of people enjoy having various different play styles available to try out.

You’re also not that far from the Wellington scene, which is growing really quickly using that strategy. They have at least a couple of campaigns with weekend-long games, and a lot of one-off larps running.

If you do Facebook, there’s a fairly large NZ larp group (500+ members) here: facebook.com/groups/nzlarps/

IdiotSavant is in Palmy North too, does a lot of stuff in regards to NZLARPs, probably the guy who left the NZLARPs cards lying around.

Guilty. Though I do my larping mostly in wellington, and haven’t played live Vampire in, um, 15 years (and I still have the scars).

It has been many, many years since I’ve played live Vampire. And I missed it, so I decided to run it.

Hi, I’m Jess
I’ve never larped before, unless you count a get-together at the end of NaNoWriMo where we all turned up dressed (and acting) as our characters. Alas, study is finished, and now I’m back in Auckland, surrounded by sane, real-world people. I can haz characters and dress-up?
Ahem.
But anyway, larping has been something I’ve wanted to do pretty much since I heard it existed, and I can finally get around to starting. I guess now I wander over to the events forum, and see what’s going on…

Chimera, in August, is a good place to try a variety of larps. Check out the forum for it.

If you’re super-enthused to try larp out immediately and willing to travel, there’s a weekend convention called Hydra in Wellington in two week’s time

Hydra is like Chimera’s younger sibling, it runs for the whole weekend and there are lots of different games to play.

Would be best to sign up immediately if you’re keen for Hydra, so they can send your character sheets. 2 weeks is probably just enough to read the characters and have a little think about costumes.

I’ll definitely have a look at Chimera.
Hydra, though, is a bit soon for something so far away. I’d have to get time off, and that’s not going to happen on such short notice.
Thanks for the replies

Well, if you’re after stuff in Wellington with more notice, there’s a campaign game here in October (10-12th) if you feel adventurous. It’s called 33AR and we always have more crew slots. :smiling_imp: (Crew basically play any character the players interact with that isn’t another player. Townspeople, allies, enemies, irate ex-spouses, and so on. No previous experience needed)

hello i’m alex…i’m 19 and i have been wanting to do larp for awhile now, i am looking for a group and would love any help i live in mt Albert auckland if i could get some tips and help i would be very grateful

Hi Alex, welcome!

Other resources here are nzlarps on Facebook facebook.com/groups/nzlarps/

And facebook.com/groups/Whatislarp/

And the current big larp facebook.com/groups/573086502745678/)

And here in Hamilton facebook.com/groups/HamiltonlarpNZ/

And of course Chimera: nzlarps.org/chimera/

Its next weekend, but there are still vacancies, and it is very beginner-friendly. You can try a variety of types of games and see what you like. If you’re worried about costuming, ask, and people will sort you out.

(I’m looking for players for Moorstepper on lloegyr on Friday night. While I have limited baggage allowance, I can bring spare costume to help)

that would be cool, i signed up to go yesterday

That’s awesome! There will be people in red hats who are specifically there to help out any new people

Greetings! Can’t believe that it has taken me this long to discover this – I came across LARPing through some online podcasts on cosplaying, then saw the booth at this year’s Armageddon (I didn’t have much time to talk as I was chaperoning a friend’s 10 year old at the time, but I took some literature and found this site from there).

I have not LARPed before, but have a background in theatre and improv, and coupled with a love of costumes and prop building, I figure this is something I’d like to explore. I also have some experience of tabletop RPGs and a moderate obsession with the sci-fi and fantasy genres… (and recent leanings towards steampunk too…).

I have been lurking on this forum for a couple of weeks, finally decided to sign up and make myself known…
